Yes! Kentucky real estate laws require that all licensed agents work under brokers (who have additional training and a broker’s license) or licensed real estate brokerage firm before they can practice.
Choosing the right brokerage is an important step in your career, as different brokerages may have varying commission structures, fees, training, and support. We encourage students to interview at least 4-5 brokerages to compare offerings and understand the costs involved, including potential association, MLS, desk, or franchise fees. Finding a brokerage that aligns with your goals will set you up for success as a Kentucky real estate professional.
What are the requirements to obtain a real estate license in Kentucky?
To become a licensed real estate sales associate in Kentucky, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
To begin the process of getting a real estate license in Kentucky, you must be at least 18 years old before taking steps to obtain a license.
- Have a high school diploma or G.E.D.
In Kentucky, any persons pursuing a real estate license at minimum, must have either a high school diploma or GED (with proof of completion when applying for license with KREC) before taking steps to obtain a license.
- Complete one of the following education requirements:
– 6 semester credit hours in real estate from an accredited college OR
– 96 hours of pre-licensing education (includes completing and passing the course final exam) from a KREC-approved provider (Our program meets this requirement!) - Pass a criminal background check

Important Note: All national criminal history checks expire 90 days after the report date of issuance. - Pass the Kentucky Sales Associate Licensing Exam (administered by PSI)

- Obtain Errors and Omissions insurance
All active Kentucky real estate licensees or applicants must secure E&O insurance before applying, activating, or renewing their license. You can obtain coverage through the KREC Group Program or any private carrier that meets 201 KAR 11:220 requirements, [Learn more about E&O coverage options here].
- Obtain license with KREC within 60 days of passing the PSI licensing exam
After passing both portions of the exam (state and national), you can submit your application in two ways:
Mail Submission: Receive a paper application at the testing site, complete it, and mail it to the Kentucky Real Estate Commission (KREC) with a check or money order.
Online Submission: Within 36–48 hours, you’ll get an email from ppc.krec@ky.gov with a link to complete your application and pay fees online via credit/debit card or ACH (electronic check).
